Lesson 5

Al-Khāliq, Al-Bāri’ and Al-Musawwir: You Are Not the Owner; You Are a Trustee

“He is Allah—the Creator, the Originator and the Fashioner.”
Al-Hashr, 24

When a person looks at the world, they see things.

They see the tree, the fruit, the earth, the water, other human beings and themselves.

But seeing does not always mean understanding.

If a person looks only at the visible form, they see what has been created but cannot read the meaning behind it.

The Qur’an teaches the human being not merely to look, but to read what they see.

“Allah taught Adam all the names.”
Al-Baqarah, 31

What was given to Prophet Adam was not merely knowledge of the names of things.

The human being was given the ability to recognise the meaning behind them.

The ability to see Al-Jamīl in beauty,
Al-Hakīm in order,
Ar-Rahmān in mercy,
and Al-Musawwir in artistry…

Among created beings, the human being does not merely live; they are able to give meaning to what they experience.

Looking at Things and Reading Them

Looking at a tree is one thing; reading the tree is another.

If you see a tree only as something that bears fruit, you see the tree.

If you reflect upon how that fruit emerges from earth, water and sunlight, you see order.

If you notice its colour, fragrance, taste and the way it has been prepared in a form suited to the human being, you see mercy.

But we must not stop there.

The tree is a hand through which the fruit reaches us; yet the power that gives the fruit does not belong to the tree.

The tree has branches, but it has no power to create.

The earth contains various substances, but it does not know which fruit should be made or how it should be formed.

The sun provides warmth, but it cannot choose the fruit’s colour, fragrance or taste.

The causes are visible.

But the power belongs to Allah.

If a person rejects causes altogether, they deny the order of life.

If they attribute creative power to causes, they forget Allah.

The right way of seeing is to recognise the cause while knowing that the outcome comes from Allah.

The Human Being Is Also a Mirror

The human being does not only read the universe.

They, too, are a mirror that must be read.

Knowledge has been given to the human being; it may remind us of Al-‘Alīm.

Mercy has been given to the human being; it may remind us of Ar-Rahīm.

A sense of justice has been given to the human being; it may remind us of Al-‘Adl.

A sense of art and beauty has been given to the human being; it may remind us of Al-Musawwir.

The ability to forgive has been given to the human being; it may remind us of Al-Ghafūr.

But a mirror does not own the beauty it reflects.

The light of the sun may appear in a mirror. If the mirror imagines that the light belongs to it, it loses sight of the truth.

The human being falls into the same error when they imagine that the abilities given to them are their own property.

They imagine that their intellect comes from themselves.

They attribute their success solely to their own strength.

They regard their wealth as proof of their superiority.

They claim their art, knowledge or goodness as their own.

Yet the beauties seen within a person are trusts that have been given to them.

The human being is the mirror, not the owner of the light.

Possessing and Representing

If a person uses the abilities given to them in the name of their own ego, they claim ownership of them.

If they use them in the name of Allah, they represent.

If knowledge makes a person proud, the trust has been claimed as personal property.

If power makes a person oppressive, the trust has been abused.

If wealth dulls a person’s conscience, the blessing has turned against them.

If art is created only for applause, beauty has been tied to the human ego.

If mercy is shown only to those who are close to us, the name Ar-Rahīm has not been carried into life.

If a person claims the names of Allah for themselves, they fall into the illusion of greatness.

They imagine themselves to be the source.

They forget the limits of their own strength.

But if they see everything as a trust from Allah, they become a vicegerent.

Vicegerency is not a position of superiority.

It is a position of representation and responsibility.

The Earth Is Not Property; It Is a Trust

“I am going to place a vicegerent upon the earth.”
Al-Baqarah, 30

The human being is not the owner of the earth.

The earth is not an unlimited possession given to humanity, but a trust placed in our care so that it may be protected.

The earth is a trust.

Wealth is a trust.

Duty and position are trusts.

Knowledge is a trust.

Family and children are trusts.

The confidence of others is a trust.

A person’s own body and lifetime are also trusts.

This requires us to live not as owners, but as trustees.

An owner imagines that they may use what they possess however they wish.

A trustee knows that they are accountable for what has been placed in their care.

The human being’s duty is not to rule over everything.

It is to protect what must be protected, beautify what must be beautified, and use every ability they have been given in accordance with the purpose for which it was created.

Everything Given Is a Trial

“He created death and life to test which of you is best in conduct.”
Al-Mulk, 2

What a person does with what they have been given matters as much as what they have received.

The one given power is tested through justice.

The one given wealth is tested through sharing.

The one given knowledge is tested through humility.

The one given hardship is tested through patience.

The one given beauty is tested through chastity.

The one given position is tested through the trust placed upon them.

If a person sees what they possess only as a blessing, they forget accountability.

If they see it only as a trial, they forget gratitude.

The right way of seeing is to recognise what has been given as both a blessing and a trust.

A blessing calls for gratitude.

A trust calls for responsibility.

You Cannot Create Yourself Through What You Do

A person works.

They make decisions.

They strive.

They bring forth a work.

Yet they are not the absolute owner even of their own actions.

“It is Allah who created you and what you do.”
As-Saffat, 96

You act, but Allah creates the outcome.

You plant the seed, but you cannot give it life.

You seek treatment, but you cannot create healing.

You work, but you cannot open every door.

You speak, but you cannot determine which heart your words will reach.

Will has been given to the human being, but the outcome belongs to Allah.

This understanding does not distance a person from work.

On the contrary, it enables them to fulfil their duty while lifting the burden of the outcome from their shoulders.

A person strives, but does not worship their own work.

They achieve success, but do not imagine themselves to be the creator.

They suffer loss, but do not believe that everything has come to an end.

For they are not the one who creates the outcome.

Life Is a Mirror of the Divine Names

Seeing, hearing, loving and knowing are possible through life.

Life is a mirror of the names of Allah.

At every moment they live, a person may read the manifestation of a different name.

Al-Musawwir in the form of a flower…

Al-Khāliq in the creation of a living being…

Al-Bāri’ in the way distinct beings are brought into existence, each in a form suited to them…

Ar-Rahīm in a mother’s tenderness…

Ar-Razzāq in the arrival of a morsel of food…

Al-Jabbār in the closing of a wound…

At-Tawwāb in returning from a mistake…

Knowing the names is not increasing the number of words one has memorised.

It is changing the meaning one sees when looking at life.

The names cease to be mere information and become the vision of faith.

The Heart Key of This Lesson

Everything you think you possess has been given to you.

Your body, intellect, abilities, wealth, position and the confidence others place in you…

Each one is a trust.

Do not forget that you are a mirror.

You are not the source of the beauty seen within you.

But you are responsible for how you reflect that beauty.

When you look at yourself, see not your superiority, but your trust.

When you look at the universe, see not merely the objects, but the meaning.

When you reach an outcome, see not only your effort, but the power that created it.

Prayer

My Lord,
teach me to read all things in Your name.

Enable me to recognise Your artistry in beauty,
Your wisdom in order,
Your mercy in compassion,
and Your power in everything that has been created.

Do not allow me to claim the abilities You have given me as belonging to my own ego.

Grant me the understanding that Your blessings are not a cause for superiority,
but an occasion for gratitude and responsibility.

Make me not one of those who claim ownership, but one of those who protect Your trust.

Teach me to see myself not as the owner of the light,
but as a mirror reflecting Your names.
