“He is Allah—the Sovereign, the Most Holy, the Source of Peace, the Giver of Security and the Guardian.”
Al-Hashr, 23
When a person seeks protection, they usually expect their circumstances to change.
They want the illness to pass, the danger to move away, the door to open, the injustice to end and the waiting to be over.
If these things happen, they believe that Allah has protected them.
If they do not, a question may enter the heart:
“Why did Allah not protect me?”
Yet protection does not always mean that the danger disappears.
Sometimes Allah does not change the circumstances; He protects the person within them.
Even Prison Can Protect
Prophet Yusuf prayed to be saved from those who were calling him towards sin.
His prayer was not followed by immediate relief.
He was sent to prison.
From the outside, this did not look like deliverance. Yet the prison became a protective veil that prevented Yusuf from falling into sin.
The subtle truth here is this:
An answered prayer does not necessarily mean immediate relief.
Sometimes Allah protects His servant by removing them from hardship.
At other times, He keeps them within the hardship while preserving their innocence, character and direction.
If a person looks only at where they are, they see the prison.
When they look at the outcome, they see the protection.
Look at What You Did Not Lose
When a person is in the midst of hardship, they count only what they have lost.
They have lost their comfort.
They have lost their opportunities.
They have lost the support of others.
They may have lost their reputation or their freedom.
But the essential question is this:
“While living through all of this, what did I not lose?”
If you did not lose your faith,
if you did not corrupt your character,
if suffering injustice did not make you unjust,
if your anger did not stain you,
if you preserved your direction towards Allah…
Then you have not lost everything.
Sometimes Allah protects not what a person possesses, but the person’s very essence.
What appears outwardly to be a loss may have prevented a far greater loss within.
Prayer Does Not Always Ask for a Particular Outcome
Prayer is not only asking for events to end as we wish.
Sometimes prayer asks not for a particular outcome, but for the right direction.
Alongside saying, “O Allah, remove this hardship immediately,” it is also being able to say:
“Do not let this hardship corrupt me.”
A person cannot always choose the events they will experience.
But they can care about the kind of person they remain within those events.
They may suffer injustice without surrendering their heart to hatred.
They may lose something without losing their honesty.
They may wait without losing hope.
They may feel afraid without seeking refuge in oppression because of their fear.
The protection of Allah, Al-Muhaymin, sometimes becomes visible here:
The event does not end immediately, but it cannot take possession of the person’s heart.
The Protection We Do Not See
In the account of Prophet Musa and Khidr, a wall that is about to collapse is repaired.
Beneath the wall lies a treasure belonging to two orphans.
Because the orphans are still young, the treasure would not be safe if it were uncovered immediately. Keeping the wall standing ensures that their rightful property remains hidden until the proper time.
On that day, the orphans did not know what was being done for them.
They did not see why the wall had been repaired.
They were unaware that they were being protected.
But their lack of knowledge did not mean that they were not under protection.
In the same way, a person may not understand today why certain doors have not opened.
They may mistake delay for loss.
They may think that waiting means they have been forgotten.
Yet Allah may be preparing certain forms of goodness in order to safeguard years that are still to come.
Something that does not happen today may be the security of tomorrow.
A wall kept standing today may be protecting a trust of which we are not yet aware.
Control Belongs to Allah
A person cannot control the whole of their life.
They cannot know the future.
They cannot rule over the intentions of others.
They cannot guarantee outcomes.
The more they try to control everything, the more exhausted their heart becomes.
The name Al-Muhaymin reminds a person to whom control truly belongs.
Nothing you will encounter is independent of Allah’s knowledge, power and wisdom.
This does not mean that every event will be easy.
Nor does it mean that we will immediately understand the reason for every pain.
But it teaches us that nothing is without an Owner.
Peace does not depend upon the outcome necessarily being as we desire.
Peace is trusting that the outcome will never fall outside the judgement of Al-Hakīm.
Being Watched Over Is Not Merely Consolation
Knowing that Allah sees us does not offer consolation only in times of pain.
This knowledge also protects a person’s character.
Remaining truthful even when no one is watching…
Not becoming corrupt when power comes into your hands…
Not making the good you do dependent upon the applause of others…
Not departing from justice when you suffer injustice…
Ihsan is to act beautifully, not so that people may see, but because Allah sees.
A person who knows the name Al-Muhaymin does not only ask to be protected; they also protect what has been entrusted to them.
They protect their heart, their word, the truth, the trust and the dignity of others.
For the person who knows that they are under Allah’s watch cannot be one person in private and another before the eyes of people.
The Heart Key of This Lesson
Do not look for Allah’s protection only in the harms that never reach you.
Look also at what the things that did reach you were unable to turn you into.
Perhaps the hardship did not end, but it could not make you an oppressor.
Perhaps the door did not open, but it could not lead you into what is forbidden.
Perhaps people did not understand you, but you did not abandon the truth.
Perhaps the outcome you desired did not come, but you did not lose your direction towards Allah.
Then you were not alone.
You were being watched over.
Sometimes Allah preserves His servant by removing them from hardship,
and sometimes by protecting their essence within the hardship itself.
Prayer
O Allah,
save me from seeking Your protection only in comfort.
Even when I cannot immediately understand what is happening to me,
remind me that nothing is independent
of Your knowledge, power and wisdom.
Protect me not only from dangers,
but also from becoming corrupted within them.
When I suffer injustice, preserve my justice;
while I wait, preserve my hope;
when I suffer loss, preserve my faith;
and when I grow strong, preserve my mercy.
In the times when I cannot see the outcome,
do not let me forget that I remain under Your watch.
